Seeking a Principal
Cardinal Bernardin Early Childhood Center, 1651 N. Diversey Parkway, Chicago, IL 60614
Our School: Cardinal Bernardin Early Childhood Center, located in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago, IL, is a regional Montessori school that serves children preschool through third grade. We also have parent/child classes for infants and toddlers. Our diverse population of 150 three through nine year old students is 70% Catholic and 30% non-Catholic. They come from 15 different zip codes within the city. Our community can be described as young, upwardly mobile families.
CBECC was founded in 1998. The Archdiocese of Chicago saw that many young families were moving into the area and predicted that an early childhood center would be needed. It was to be rooted in Catholic identity to meet the needs of the growing and changing urban community. Sister Barbara Jean Ciszek, a distinguished educator in the Montessori community, was recruited to be the principal. She remained principal until her death in 2015. Our staff of 20 consists of teachers and aides who hold Montessori certification. Many are also state certified. All are involved in on-going professional development.
Our Mission: The core of our mission is to provide a Catholic educational environment for young children in a setting that supports their developmental needs, helping each child to become a creative and competent human being who is fully aware of him/herself, of others, and the earth. In the Montessori tradition, each class is composed of multi-aged groups, 3-5 year olds and 6-9 year olds. Our unique urban campus has two large outdoor spaces, including our award winning garden. This enhances each child’s learning, social development, and academic achievement.
Our motto, “Catholic…Montessori…Family,” summarizes our mission and spirit, drawing together parents, teachers and community to serve our students. The parents are a wonderful support as they work together to maintain our gardens, plan and support fundraisers, and serve on our school board and Parent Ambassador program.
